Cocke County Project Diabetes
Welcome to the Project Diabetes page for the Cocke County School System. We were awarded a 3 year grant from the state of Tennessee Department of Health for a total of $275,900.00. The grant period began July 1, 2016 and will end June 30, 2019. Our project is "Healthier Us" and is focused on increased physical activity and healthy food and beverage options.
In year 1, running from July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017 we concentrated our efforts on our physical education programs. We partnered with a national physical education expert who came to Cocke County to work with our physical education teachers. We also were able to have each PE teacher make a "wish list" of new equipment they would like to have for their schools. We then turned their wishes into reality! They were excited to say the least! We also began work on new playgrounds for 3 of our elementary schools. Finally we helped with the "Healthy Choices" component of the Save the Children after-school programs.
Year 2 began July 1, 2017 and went through June 30, 2018. We continued to focus on the new playgrounds. We added 3 more elementary schools, making a total of 6 new playgrounds for our county schools. We were able to get the installation finished for 5 of the schools. We again helped the "Healthy Choices" after-school program.
The 3rd and final year began July 1, 2018 and will end June 30, 2019. This year we will focus on the installation on the 6th playground. We will again be helping Save the Children with the "Healthy Choices" after-school program. Finally we will switch gears and use the remaining money to install water fill stations in as many schools in our county as possible. These units have proven to increase the students daily water intake as well as reduce the spread of germs and disease through conventional water fountain use.
